Junior Program – Learning, Growing and Belonging
The Junior Program at Mornington Special Developmental School provides a rich, engaging and highly individualised learning environment where every student is supported to develop their communication, independence, confidence and sense of belonging. We recognise that every child learns differently. Our Junior curriculum is designed around each student's individual strengths, interests, abilities and learning goals, with learning embedded throughout the school day in meaningful and purposeful ways.
Learning through play, exploration and connection
Our Junior students learn best when they are actively engaged, having fun and experiencing success. Learning is brought to life through play, hands-on experiences, music, movement, stories, sensory experiences, creative activities and opportunities to explore the world around them. Our classrooms provide structured and predictable routines while also allowing students to follow their interests, make choices, develop curiosity and build confidence as learners.
Communication is at the heart of learning
Developing communication is a key focus of our Junior Program. We support every student to develop their own ways of communicating, whether through speech, gesture, Key Word Sign, visuals, AAC or other communication systems. Students are provided with frequent opportunities to express their wants, needs, choices, emotions and ideas, interact with others and develop meaningful relationships. Communication skills are embedded across classroom learning, play, mealtimes, specialist programs and everyday experiences.
Building independence for life
From the very beginning of their school journey, our students are encouraged and supported to become as independent as possible. Learning extends beyond the classroom to develop practical skills such as managing personal belongings, following routines, making choices, participating in mealtimes, personal care routines, safety and taking responsibility for themselves and their environment. We celebrate every step towards independence, recognising that small achievements can represent significant milestones for our students.
Developing social and emotional skills
Our Junior Program provides many opportunities for students to develop friendships, participate in group activities, take turns, share, respond to others and understand and express their emotions. Students are supported to recognise their feelings, develop strategies for regulation, build positive relationships and feel safe and confident within their school community.
Learning through specialist programs and experiences
Our Junior students benefit from a broad and engaging curriculum that incorporates literacy, numeracy, science, health and physical education, the arts, communication, personal and social learning and functional life skills.
Learning beyond the classroom
Our students are encouraged to learn through real-world experiences and to develop the skills they need to participate in their families, school and wider community. Through excursions, community experiences, physical activity, outdoor learning and everyday school routines, students are supported to develop confidence, safety awareness, social skills and greater independence.
