Speech Therapist

Speech Therapy at Mornington SDS

At Mornington Special Developmental School, speech therapy is an important part of supporting our students to communicate, connect and participate as independently as possible.

Our qualified Speech Pathologist Lillian Colley, works alongside students, teachers, education support staff and families to identify individual communication needs and develop practical strategies that can be incorporated throughout the school day.

Speech therapy is about much more than speech. For our students, it can support functional communication, understanding and following instructions, social communication, expressive and receptive language, alternative and augmentative communication (AAC), and the development of confidence and independence. Speech therapy also includes mealtime and swallowing safety to ensure our students can safely eat and drink.

Having a qualified Speech Pathologist working within our school environment provides significant benefits. Lillian is able to observe students in their everyday learning environments and tailor strategies to their individual abilities, communication styles and needs. She can also work directly with staff to ensure communication strategies are used consistently across classrooms and activities.

For students who may have difficulty expressing their needs, making choices, interacting with others or understanding what is being communicated to them, effective speech and language support can make a meaningful difference to their participation, learning, relationships and overall wellbeing.
